I probably have the best mom around. Not many mom's would be cool with spontaneously venturing off to a weekend in Oregon to explore Astoria (The Goonies Mecca) and Portland.
We stayed in a little Bed & Breakfast called The Grandview Bed & Breakfast and I had flashbacks to that episode of Gilmore Girls when Rory and Lorelai visit the Cheshire Cat Inn. You know the one. Our room was called the "Little Hummers Suite" and it was COVERED in hummingbirds. The wallpaper. Pillows. Art. Everything.
The next morning we woke up to a very foggy view of the Columbia River.
Breakfast was delish and we got ready for a day of exploring Astoria.
A LOT of movies have been filmed in the small community of Astoria and one of my family's absolute favourites has got to be the 1990 cinematic treasure, Kindergarten Cop, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. This school was used in the filming so we HAD to check it out.
The Goonies. Probably one of my all-time favourite movies. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing and watch it right now.
Did you watch it yet? Okay, good.
It's been a dream of mine to visit the Goonies house and while it was awesome to (sort-of) see it in real life, it was a real shame that we couldn't go up the hill all the way to check it out. Obviously the house is in a residential neighbourhood and there were strict rules about parking and going up the hill to the house so we had to settle for a quick photo from a distance. Due to the distance, I felt like recreating the Truffle Shuffle would be especially frowned upon. And that Mom wouldn't be too happy if I embarrassed her by attempting such a difficult dance.
Being the diehard Goonies fan that I am, I knew I had to visit Cannon Beach (opening and closing scenes from the film happened here). You can see I was a little bit excited to be there. Cue an onslaught of selfies on the beach.
Needless to say, we enjoyed our windy visit to Cannon Beach. I NEED to go back in the summer one day.
We made our way back to Astoria but first decided to stop for lunch and a little exploring in Seaside, OR.
Can you see us?
One thing my mom, sisters, and I enjoy doing is checking out old cemeteries to read the headstones. We just find the history side really interesting and we couldn't resist visiting a Pioneer Cemetery.
We got back to Astoria and decided to see the Oregon Film Museum. It's in the old County Jail building and was used in the filming of The Goonies (shocking, I know).
Yes, this is the Fratelli's vehicle from the movie. Yes, I fangirled over a vehicle.
"Listen, okay? You guys'll never believe me. There was two cop cars, okay? And they were chasing this four-wheel deal, this real neat ORV, and there were bullets flying all over the place. It was the most amazing thing I ever saw!"
Then we checked out the Astoria Coffee Co. and official Goonies store where I purchased the best mug ever.
It sort of scares my family but I love it.
We went and had dinner at the Fort George Brewery + Public House. The food was awesome but unfortunately it was super busy and we had to sit at the bar where I had the most awful gentleman standing next to me. He kept moving over and I had to keep moving closer and closer to my mom until I was practically sitting on her lap. But other than that, the atmosphere was nice and the service was okay.
After dinner, we went back to the b&b and watched a couple episodes of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt which is amazing and you need to watch it.
The next day, we drove to Portland. We decided to take the scenic route through the woods and it was one of the best drives I've ever been on.
We made it to Portland and the sun came out just for us!
We had a really yummy lunch of soups and sandwiches at Potbelly's!
Naturally we had to check out Voodoo Doughnuts as I couldn't resist the incredibly creative doughnut options. Also, I couldn't resist the Instagram opportunities.
Hammin' it up in front of the many murals in Portland.
Portland was a really eclectic and fun place to visit. They definitely keep it weird there.
As much as I enjoyed Portland, I do wish we had spent more time exploring Astoria. I guess that means I'll have to go back? Oh darn. ;)
